  • Product Review - Online Backup - OPENRSM CloudBackup

    ?Introduction:

OPENRSM CloudBackup is a service that lets you store files and backup data securely to a nearly unlimited backup to internet vault. Unlike competitors, OPENRSM has CloudBackup engineered to scale from minimal to massive with no restrictions. You pay a flat fee (which get’s you a BIG datastore) and only pay extra for the actual storage you use in excess of that.  It works the same on Windows, MAC, and Linux systems as well.

You can access the CloudBackup drive as a network disk or with the local web server.), over WebDav or via the local http server.  CloudBackup keeps a local cache that allows most operations to be instantaneous with any changes being made in the background. The builtin backup utility works well and previous versions are kept if desired. This makes CloudBackup suitable for backup as well as temporary file storage, or as a remote filesystem for collaborative work.  Block level incremental backup is supported through CloudBackup.

    Cool Features

    • New Intuitive User Interface
    • Support for connecting to multiple data stores at the same time
    • Support for multiple backup jobs with independent scheduling
    • Highly configurable bandwidth limiting
    • Identical Features and Interface on Windows, MAC, and Linux
    • Download verification and in-application reporting
    • Unlimited number of computers with a single account

    Who it helps:

Since it’s so powerful, OPENRSM CloudBackup can automate offsite backups for business or personal systems, as a distributed data store, and other scenarios. The interface is easy to use and can be setup as easily (more easily actually) than most other programs.  Therefore CloudBackup is designed for novice to expert computer users who are looking for a safe backup solution or to access files remotely without the restrictions offered by competitors.  Or, like me… BOTH. For example: All files, folders, data is in full view. Just like having an unlimited sized SAN. You can simply set it, forget it, and let the scheduler backup any changed files over the internet (encrypted of course).

    Good Points:

Set it and forget it backups. Set it up to run regular backups and you’ll have no more worries about the lifespan of your harddisk or the safety of data. Small bandwidth usage. It uses it’s cache as a buffer and only updates changed bytes.  So bandwidth use is limited after the first backup. Great control without confusion. Options settings for limiting bandwidth, saving previous versions, and detailed logging. You can get dirty if you want but I hardly ever needed to access the manual. Works with your computers and programs. The network drive can be used as a filesystem for you to use as your regular application store. I use OpenOffice Impress, Calendar, and my other collaborative software directly over the network drive and it works perfectly. It’s great for storing your QuickBooks backups, etc. to it., to use the Network Drive. And it doesn’t make any difference if you have a PC, a MAC, or a Linux machine (or a whole network of them)… It simply works, and works well.

    Possible Concerns:

Depends on your internet connection. Inherent to CloudBackup is your broadband connection. If your first backup is slow most likely it’s due to a restricted or slow connection. However you can control backup times and limit speed within those or independent time constraints. But this isn’t an issue because of it’s upload speed controls and efficient bandwidth use. It has to be said I guess I’m always open to do nearly the same for cheaper or free. But CloudBackup has a feature set that surpasses more expensive solutions and is fairly priced.

    Here’s why I reccomend it:

It’s one of the best solutions for painless backup and accessing files, documents, photos, etc. from anywhere.  Together it’s a killer combination. Add in the security and flexibility and I have to heartily recommend it.  Paying a small monthly fee to have his peace of mind is worth it for me.

    How it Stacks Up:

    • OPENRSM CloudBackup has more space and reliability than a local backup.
    • Files are still available for all processes with full functionality unlike other solutions.
    • The backup to internet functionality works as good as local backup solutions.
    • You can use your existing backup or sync software or use the native backup from every five minute to once a week.

    The Last Word

Cloudbackup is a secure, reliable, and powerful way to have a inexpensive data storage solution that can be used in many ways. I have to recommend it unless your internet connection is unreasonably restricted or your data means nothing to you. Solutions that cost less (and may do less) could be available, but I can’t find any. OPENRSM CloudBackup makes my home and business computing easier and better.
